Serving the South London Sikh Community

Sikhi is a monotheistic religion founded in the Punjab region of South Asia by Guru Nanak Dev Ji, born in 1469, and it is based on the teachings of the ten Sikh Gurus, whose messages are compiled in the sacred scripture, the Sri Guru Granth Sahib.

Core beliefs include the oneness of God (called Waheguru), the equality of all humankind, honest living, selfless service to others (Sewa), and remembering God at all times.

It is a way of life that emphasizes living virtuously and is open to all people.  Sikhi's holiest and most pre-eminent spiritual place is Harmandir Sahib (the Golden Temple) in Amritsar in Panjab in India.

The first known Sikh to live in the UK was Maharaja Duleep Singh who was brought here against his will as a child by the Colonial authorities in 1854.

The main Sikh settlers started arriving from about 1900 and there are now 535,000 Sikhs here, comprising close to 1% of the UK's population.  London had its first Sikh Gurdwara by 1908.

British Sikhs have been praised as an example of positive cultural integration in the UK, many having achieved success due to a strong cultural work ethic combined with an emphasis on the importance of the family.
